Long before a controller entered the picture, music was already something to take apart. In 1997, before app stores, YouTube tutorials, and creator platforms made digital production widely approachable, Sonic Foundry Sound Forge became the first lab: edits, rearrangements, homemade remixes, and the discovery that a track could be treated as material.
Digital experimentation grew alongside physical records, turntables, and a substantial vinyl collection. The crate became both an archive and a way of learning how eras, grooves, and unexpected records speak to one another.
Moving to Las Vegas for undergraduate school pushed the relationship with music into DJing. A first Numark controller opened the door; later rigs moved predominantly toward Pioneer equipment.
Rekordbox and Djay Pro became key parts of the mixing workflow, balancing preparation with room for the set to change direction when the right record appears.
Adobe Audition, Ableton Suite, MPC Beats, and AKAI hardware including the APC40, MPD series, MPC Force, and MPK series expanded the work into beat-making, remixing, sampling, and original production.
RIL is now a bass-driven, genre-fluid identity where groove, psychedelia, hip-hop influence, rock memory, festival energy, visual art, and curiosity are allowed to collide without asking permission.
